March 2017 Shepherd's Letter
Dear Brothers and Sisters,
As we continue into Spring, we look forward to remembering Christ’s death and celebrating His resurrection. Below are several ways we invite you to celebrate the Gospel this Easter Season:
We will host a Family Easter Event on Saturday, April 8 from 10:30am—1:30pm. Invite friends, neighbors, and bring your family! This will be a fun time of children’s activities, food, and the comedy and magic of Brad Brown as he shares about the love of Jesus.
Good Friday Service
Join us for a special worship service this Good Friday (April 14, 7:00pm) as we look to Jesus and consider the greatness of His finished work.
Resurrection Sunday Baptism Celebration
We are glad to announce a special baptism celebration on Resurrection Sunday in-between our regular worship services. There will be no regular Sunday school at 10:00am. Instead, we invite all Sunday School classes to join us in the sanctuary to hear testimonies and witness baptisms as we celebrate Christ’s saving work. This will be followed by a time of refreshments and coffee downstairs before the second worship service.
In addition, as we enter this season many visitors will join with us. Here are three practical suggestions for giving a gracious welcome and loving our neighbors during the worship service:
First, reach out. If there’s someone near you that you don’t know, reach out and welcome them with the love of Christ. Introduce yourself, invite them to sit near you, and get to know them.
Second, move up. If you’re able to sit closer toward the front, placing yourself toward the front is a gracious way to accommodate those who arrive late, or to provide space to parents with little ones who may need a quick exit.
Last, move in. As the sanctuary fills (especially in holiday seasons), sometimes it’s hard for families to sit together, and it can be difficult to step past people to take a seat in the center. In consideration for others as you’re able, think about sitting toward the center of the aisle to provide space for others.
In other news, over this weekend ten men from OBC will be traveling to Indianapolis for The Gospel Coalition Conference: No Other Gospel (April 3-5). A live stream of the main sessions will be available should you want to follow along. Please pray that this time would be edifying and refreshing. In addition, a Simeon Trust Workshop will be hosted at Del Ray Baptist Church (May 10-12). Men, we encourage you to take advantage of this opportunity to grow in your understanding of how to read and teach the Bible.
The budget report for February is complete, and expenses continue to exceed income. Savings continue to supply for this need, yet financial resources are limited. We remain committed to not incurring debt, and we are praying that the Lord would provide for OBC’s ministry of the Gospel as we seek to be good stewards of what He has provided. Please pray for God’s provision and consider how you might be generous for the sake of the Gospel.
Preparations for Community VBS are underway. We encourage you to consider how you might be part of this ministry to the children of OBC and our community. Contact Wendy Schrock for details. In addition to that, we are continuing our discussion about increasing our ministry offerings for children this Fall. Pray with us for wisdom as we consider how we might meet this need.
Our next Discover OBC class (Part 2) will be meeting on Sunday (April 30). If you have not finished the class or handed in your application, we invite you to complete the membership process. We invite our church family to help host this class, and different Home Groups are in rotation to serve lunch and provide childcare. Please contact Jeff Conn (firstname.lastname@example.org) if you would like to help in this ministry.
And as we continue in 1 Corinthians, may God give us a heart to love one another, using our gifts and our tongues to build up one another in Christ to the glory of God.
Grace and peace to you in Christ,
Pastor Ben, on behalf of the Elders
